The Frank Buteau Papers consist of letters, stories, legal papers, and photographs that document the life and work of Francois (Frank) Buteau, an early pioneer in Alaska and the Yukon, gold miner, and inventor. The photographs include images of members of the Yukon Order of Pioneers; family members and early Fairbanks residents; church fairs at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Fairbanks; Fairbanks street scenes; and some of Buteau's inventions The collection also includes a poem by Buteau's adopted daughter Lucy.

Francois (Frank) Buteau (1856-1937) was born in Quebec. He immigrated to the United States in 1877 and arrived in Juneau, Alaska, in 1886. The following year he made his way to the Fortymile country to prospect for gold. Because he recovered more gold than anyone else in that region during the 1887 season, the other miners began to call him "King of the Forty Mile."
